FSU Meteorology participates in an Internet2 project entitled Internet Data Delivery (IDD). The project originated at the UCAR/NCAR, and distributes real-time meteorological and hydrological data from the National Weather Service (and a few other federal agencies) to Universities and private companies that need such access. FSU participates as a "tier-two" institution, which means there is one other University feeding us our data; we then use Internet2 to feed up to six other University or private sites who use the Internet2. Our participation in this project, essential for the use of real-time data in meteorological research and instruction, is responsible for a very large share of the network traffic on campus, I believe. The website describing the IDD is http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/projects/idd/index.html
Another Internet2 project for the meterology department, funded as a demonstration project from NSF in 1997/1998, was the development of the CUDOS archive; CUDOS stands for Comprehensive Upper-air Demonstrations, Observations, and Systems project at FSU; we have continued to maintain this web site as a way to find archived upper air data from the International network of meteorological rawinsonde sites, primarily. This is much smaller scale than our involvement in the IDD. CUDOS is at |
