What is internet2?

Internet2® is a not-for-profit consortium, led by over 180 US universities, developing and deploying advanced network applications and technology, accelerating the creation of tomorrow's Internet. With participation by over 70 leading companies, Internet2 recreates the partnership of academia, industry and government that helped foster today's Internet in its infancy. UCAID (the University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development) is the formal name for the not-for-profit corporation that supports Internet2 efforts. In most cases, it's easier and more straightforward to use the name Internet2.

What is Abilene?
Abilene is a high-performance network developed by the University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development (UCAID) in partnership with Qwest Communications, Nortel Networks, Cisco Systems and Indiana University. A primary goal of Abilene is to provide a high-performance backbone network for the Internet2 community. Abilene uses high-speed Sonet facilities and IP-over-Sonet routers, accessible to gigaPoPs in several dozen locations nationwide, to support the Internet2 infrastructure. Abilene enables faculty and staff at Internet2 universities and research labs to develop and test advanced network services and applications.

Is Internet2 a separate network? Will Internet2 replace the current commercial Internet?
Internet2 is a seperate network. It will not and can not replace the existing internet. Internet2 is a research consortium bringing together institutions and resources from academia, industry and government to develop new technologies and capabilities that can then be deployed in the global Internet. Close collaboration with Internet2 corporate members will ensure that new applications and technologies are rapidly deployed throughout the Internet. Just as email and the World Wide Web are legacies of earlier investments in academic and federal research networks, the legacy of Internet2 will be to expand the possibilities of the broader Internet.

How can I colloborate with others through Internet2?

Internet2 organizes a variety of activities through which members can collaborate on new technologies, applications, and the development of best practices in building and maintaining high performance environments. A series of working groups in such areas as multicast, quality of service, digital video, and others are focused on testing and deploying specific advanced networking and applications technologies. Members also work together on projects and initiatives in middleware, such as common directory structures and authentication mechanisms, and in application areas like health sciences and fine arts. Internet2 holds general member meetings in the spring and the fall of each year, and several other regularly scheduled technical meetings throughout the year.
